Dehumidifier Questions & Answers

Q.  What is the purpose of a dehumidifier?

To remove moisture from the air.

Q. What qualities should be a part of your dehumidifier purchase decision?

1.      Value for Money Spent

Our  high quality dehumidifiers come in a wide range of sizes at a competitive price. Our dehumidifiers ensure years of worry free operation and low levels of "in service" customer attention.

2.      Reliability & Durability

Years of field experience combined with engineering research enable us to offer award-winning design in a reliable, durable product.

3.      Large Water Removal Capacity and a Large Water Container

A large water removal capacity dehumidifier will remove the water from the air faster and is able to operate over a larger range of conditions.  The large water container of our dehumidifiers' means less frequent emptying is required.

4.      Direct to Drain Option - Our dehumidifiers provide a direct drain option, which eliminates the need to empty the water container when used.

Note:  At lower temperatures a larger capacity unit is desirable.

Q. Where does moisture come from?

Cooking, washing machines, showers, dishwashers, tumble dryers, bathrooms, and ironing are all moisture producing activities.

Q. How much moisture is in the air?

The air can hold an enormous amount of moisture, especially at higher temperatures.

Q. How does a dehumidifier work?

A fan draws the moist air over the cold coils, which causes the water in the air to condense on the coils and then fall into the water container below. The second coil returns the air to the room drier, and fractionally warmer.  It is very important to ensure that you allow good air movement around the dehumidifier.

Q. Will a dehumidifier help prevent mould growth?

Yes.  Mould and mildew growth appears in continually damp areas.  A dehumidifier will remove moisture that is the root cause of mould and mildew growth.

Q. Will a dehumidifier help prevent mildew from forming on clothes?

Yes. Mildew is a form of mould.  Clothes absorb moisture when they are worn, and retain this moisture when stored in dark wardrobes. Mould and mildew grow in damp dark areas.  A dehumidifier removes this dampness from the air.

Q. Will a dehumidifier help prevent condensation and mould from forming?

Yes.   During the day and when the house is being heated, moisture is evaporated into the air.  During the night or when the temperature falls, the air can no longer hold all the absorbed moisture.  The moisture condenses on cool surfaces.  A dehumidifier will remove the moisture so there is little or none remaining to condense.  Constant present condensation can cause damage to your belongings, home, and personal health.

Q. Where should the dehumidifier be placed in the house?

A central location may be best for some houses; others may have a particularly problem room, so placement here may be the best solution.  Basements and areas below ground level are particularly damp.

Q.     Will the dehumidifier overflow when the water container is full?

No.  There is an automatic shut off switch that is activated when the water container is full.  The larger the dehumidifier water tank capacity the fewer times the tank will need to be emptied.

Q.  How often will the water container need to be emptied?

This will vary according to the humidity conditions present.  Sometimes several days will pass before it needs to be emptied, at other times it may need to be emptied twice a day. Our dehumidifiers have a permanent drain hose connection designed into the dehumidifier that can provide a means to eliminate the emptying process entirely.

Q. Does the filter need cleaning?

Yes.  Cleaning the air filter ensures maximum airflow through the dehumidifier.  The filter is there to stop the unit from becoming clogged with dirt, dust and pollen present in the air.

Q. Is a dehumidifier of benefit to asthma and allergy sufferers?

Yes, especially if the asthma or allergy is brought on, or accentuated by high humidity.  Mould and mildew that is present in high humidity air can trigger allergies and irritate the nose.

Q.  Is it normal for a dehumidifier to run continuously?

Yes, when the humidity conditions are above the setting you select on the dehumidifier. Our dehumidifiers have a built in sensor that will turn the unit off automatically once a comfortable level of dryness is achieved.  The adjustable humidistat allows customers to select this level.

Q. What size of dehumidifier do I need?

This depends on the humidity condition you are trying to correct.  The chart below will help customers select the model best suited for them under each indicated condition.  Your particular application may indicate a different model size.  See the note below.
